When an emergency plant pest is detected, timely communication and practical industry knowledge can help support an informed and coordinated response.

Plant Health Australia’s (PHA) Industry Liaison Officer (ILO) training equips growers, producers, agronomists and industry representatives with the knowledge and skills to contribute effectively during a plant biosecurity response.

ILOs play an important role during a plant biosecurity response, acting as the link between government and industry. They provide valuable insights into industry practices, the local region, and networks to support the response activities. Industry knowledge, regional insights and practical information are key to response activities and ILOs support communication with affected industries.

PHA’s ILO training is designed for growers and producers, agronomists, peak industry body staff and representatives from state-based industry organisations. Participants develop an understanding of biosecurity response arrangements and the skills and knowledge needed to contribute effectively during a biosecurity response.

Through the training, participants will:

• develop a clearer understanding of Australia’s plant biosecurity response arrangements
• learn about the role of an ILO during an emergency response
• build the knowledge and confidence to contribute industry perspectives
• understand how effective communication can support affected industries
• strengthen their industry’s preparedness and response capability.

The value extends beyond an individual participant. By building a network of trained industry representatives, the program helps industries maintain stronger connections and improves their readiness to contribute when a plant pest emergency occurs.

The most recent ILO workshop was held in Bundaberg in August and brought together participants from a range of industries including pineapples, sugarcane, avocados, nursery stock, cotton, vegetables and sweet potatoes. The final ILO training workshop for 2026 will be held in Darwin on 14 October.
