Wine regions strengthen phylloxera preparedness
Representatives from across South Australia’s wine sector came together in May for the Phylloxera Preparedness Roadshow, funded by Vinehealth Australia (VHA). The roadshow brought together growers, wineries, regional associations, government and supply chain stakeholders to explore how the industry would respond to a phylloxera outbreak.
Held from 11–15 May 2026, the roadshow delivered three regional preparedness exercises across the Adelaide Hills, Limestone Coast and McLaren Vale. The workshops were delivered through a collaboration between VHA, Plant Health Australia (PHA), the South Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) and a biosecurity consultant.
The exercises simulated a fictional phylloxera detection within each region and guided participants through the response actions outlined in the Phylloxera Outbreak Management Plan (POMP), jointly managed by VHA and PIRSA.
Through facilitated discussions and scenario-based activities, participants explored how an outbreak could affect their operations, considered response expectations, and reflected on the practical challenges that may arise during an incursion.
The workshops also provided an opportunity to compare participant responses with the POMP, raise awareness of response arrangements, and identify opportunities to strengthen preparedness planning.
By bringing preparedness activities directly to regional wine communities, the roadshow helped strengthen relationships, build awareness and support a shared commitment to protecting South Australia’s wine industry from one of its most significant biosecurity threats.
