Laying the groundwork for turf biosecurity

Plant Health Australia (PHA) is partnering with Turf Queensland to help strengthen biosecurity preparedness across Australia’s turf industry through a new Hort Innovation-funded project.

Biosecurity Planning and Implementation: A Practical Manual for Turf Growers (TU25001) will develop resources to help turf growers identify, manage and reduce biosecurity risks in their day-to-day operations.

Turf Queensland is leading the project, with PHA providing specialist technical expertise and working closely with industry and government stakeholders to ensure project outputs are practical, nationally relevant and aligned with Australia’s broader plant biosecurity system.

Recent biosecurity challenges have shown how quickly pest and disease issues can affect production costs, day-to-day operations, market access and the movement of turf. The project responds to a need for practical, turf-specific tools and guidance that help growers identify risks, improve on-farm biosecurity and prepare for future pest and disease threats as part of everyday business.

Grower and industry input will be a key part of the project, helping ensure the resources are practical, relevant and easy to implement across a range of turf production systems.

The project is funded by Hort Innovation through the Turf Research and Development Fund, using the turf research and development levy and contributions from the Australian Government.
