    PHA CEO, Sarah Corcoran

April marks a significant milestone in Plant Health Australia’s (PHA) calendar – 25 years of strengthening Australia’s plant biosecurity system through partnerships, innovation and leadership. Over the past quarter century, we have worked alongside our government, industry and associate Members to protect Australia’s agriculture industry, environment and communities from exotic plant pests and diseases. We look forward to celebrating this exciting milestone with you throughout the year.

Earlier this month my team and I attended the Northern Australia Food Futures Conference in Darwin, where I had the chance to share how PHA is working to strengthen plant biosecurity across the north. My presentation, Strengthening plant biosecurity: Plant Health Australia’s partnerships protecting northern Australia, focused on why strong, coordinated national efforts are so important — especially in high-risk regions like the north. Preparations are also well underway for our upcoming Member meetings in Adelaide, which will offer important opportunities to connect with Members and discuss key operational and strategic initiatives.

Coming up on Monday 12 May is the International Day of Plant Health which provides an opportunity to recognise the vital role of plant health in sustainable development. This year’s theme focuses on the importance of plant health in One Health and recognises how food security is interconnected with human, animal and environmental health.  PHA remains committed to raise awareness and action to keep plants and the environment healthy.

On the biosecurity front, the recent Varroa mite detection in the ACT serves as a timely reminder of the importance of bee hive registrations, ongoing surveillance, and reporting. We commend the ACT Government and local beekeepers for their swift action in responding to this detection and continue to support national coordination efforts.

I’d also like to take a moment to congratulate Dr Penny Measham on her recent appointment as CEO of Cherry Growers Australia (CGA), and Carrie Starkings as the new CEO of Summerfruit Australia, two of our valued industry Members. Penny steps into the role in May 2025, bringing a wealth of experience across horticulture, trade, research, biosecurity, and industry development. Carrie brings over 20 years’ experience in the Fresh Produce Industry to her new role at Summerfruit Australia, and has expressed her plans to work with growers across the country. We’re excited to continue strengthening our collaboration with both industries under Penny and Carrie’s leadership.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we celebrate 25 years of protecting Australia’s plant health, and as we continue to work together to build an even stronger, more connected, and resilient biosecurity system for the future.

Regards

Sarah Corcoran
