Ruth Thompson

Industry Liaison, Grains Biosecurity

Ruth Thompson is the Industry Liaison for Grains Biosecurity at Plant Health Australia, bringing a strong combination of practical farming experience, agronomic knowledge and industry leadership to the role.

Ruth grew up on a mixed farming operation in Central West New South Wales and now resides on the Darling Downs in Queensland. This background provides her with a grounded, first-hand understanding of Australian grain production systems and the day-to-day realities faced by growers.

She has built a diverse career across the agricultural sector, with experience spanning agronomy, extension, retail sales and project management. Most recently, Ruth served as Grains Policy Director with AgForce Queensland, where she led policy development and advocacy on behalf of grain producers. In this role, she developed extensive industry networks and worked closely with growers, industry bodies and government stakeholders to address key issues impacting the sector.

Ruth’s professional experience is complemented by a strong foundation in hands-on cropping systems and direct engagement with growers. Her work across commercial agribusiness and industry organisations has equipped her with the ability to translate complex technical and policy issues into practical, outcomes-focused approaches for industry adoption.

With both agronomic expertise and lived farming experience, Ruth offers a practical, on-the-ground perspective on biosecurity challenges and opportunities. She is particularly focused on strengthening collaboration across industry, fostering trusted relationships and supporting initiatives that deliver meaningful and effective biosecurity outcomes for the Australian grains sector.
