John Nielsen is PHA’s Manager, Digital Systems. In this role, he supports the development and evolution of PHA’s digital systems to meet the changing operational and strategic needs of the plant biosecurity system.

John brings 20 years’ experience across biosecurity, including insect identification, biosecurity risk analysis, national surveillance design and coordination, emergency response governance and leadership, and policy strategy.

Before joining PHA, John worked as Principal Plant Biosecurity Officer with the NT Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. He has also held various roles with the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, contributing to biosecurity initiatives across border operations, pest-free areas, pest control and emergency response operations.

John is a passionate entomologist with a strong background in biosecurity innovation. His work on the biosecurity management of Asian gypsy moths earned him a Comcover Award for excellence in government risk management.
