The Australian biosecurity landscape has taken a significant step forward with the official launch of the ARC Training Centre in Plant Biosecurity. This $10 million, five-year initiative, funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC), aims to train the next generation of biosecurity researchers and professionals, ensuring Australia remains a global leader in plant health.

Launched on International Day of Plant Health (IDPH), the Centre reflects a shared commitment to safeguarding agriculture, native ecosystems, and our way of life.

Led by three universities and 27 partner organisations, the Centre will deliver advanced training, foster cross-sector collaboration, and drive research into early detection and rapid response for plant pests and diseases.

“PHA is proud to be a partner of the ARC Training Centre in Plant Biosecurity,” said CEO Sarah Corcoran. “Our involvement on both the Partner Consultation and Training and Education Committees reflects our strong commitment to building future capability. This collaboration directly supports our Operational Priority 2, forming new partnerships to face future risks, through co-designed projects focused on extension, adoption, and science communication.”

Speaking at the launch event, Ms Corcoran also emphasised the importance of collaboration across sectors:

“Biosecurity only works when we work together. This Centre is a shining example of that principle in action.”

The Centre’s work will strengthen Australia’s resilience against emerging threats by connecting research to real-world biosecurity systems and applications.
