Collections and collaboration: highlights from the APPS conference
Experts in plant pathology gathered in Sydney for the 25th Australasian Plant Pathology Society (APPS) Conference, held from 26–28 May 2025 at the International Convention Centre. With the theme From field to future: scientific collections and plant pathology, the conference explored the role of biological collections in advancing research, agriculture, ecology and biosecurity.
Plant Health Australia (PHA) was well represented, with Dr Harsh Garg and Dr Salome Wilson presenting on national initiatives supporting diagnostics, surveillance protocols and expert networks. These initiatives form part of Australia’s coordinated approach to plant biosecurity and preparedness. Both also chaired technical sessions, facilitating discussions on emerging threats and strategic responses.
The conference brought together researchers, government officials and industry representatives from across Australasia and beyond. PHA’s contributions underscored the importance of national collaboration and science-based policy in managing plant health challenges and building future capability.
