Rod Bourke hails from a commercial beekeeping family with 4000 hives in Tasmania. In addition to working for many years in the family business, Rod has also been a prawn, coral, giant clam and seahorse farmer. He has also been a professional fishing guide and managed the Bikini Atoll Nuclear Dive Resort in the Marshall Islands.

For 4.5 years before becoming NSW BBO in May 2017, he ran 25 hives and grew seaweed for aquaculture bioremediation in north Queensland.

Rod studied aquaculture to the Post Graduate Diploma level at the University of Tasmania.
