Honey bee biosecurity update

March 11, 2015

On 3 March PHA’s Sam Malfroy met with the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council (AHBIC), the Queensland Beekeepers Association and Capilano as part of the consultation currently being undertaken to develop the National Bee Biosecurity Program and the Industry Biosecurity Code of Practice.

On the same day there was a meeting between AHBIC, PHA, Queensland Beekeepers Association and Queensland’s Department of Agriculture and Fisheries to discuss the establishment of the Code and Program in the state.

Specific changes to the documents requested by government and industry were discussed, in relation to the industry structure in Queensland and how it could work under the Biosecurity Act 2014.

It is hoped that the Act will come into effect by end 2015, but no later than 1 July 2016.
