Since the project's conception in 2006 Plant Health Australia (PHA), in collaboration with federal, state and territory governments and industry partners, has been facilitating the development and implementation of the draft National Fruit Fly Strategy.
The draft NFFS aims to develop a viable, cost effective and sustainable national approach to fruit fly management with all stakeholders committed to the national policy that underpins this approach. The strategy builds on the substantial investments made over many years by industry and governments on operational, regulatory, research and development and market access programs to manage fruit fly.
The draft NFFS was released by the Federal Minister for Agriculture in November 2008 following two years of consideration by multiple stakeholders. The draft strategy contains 20 recommendations and 80 strategies across major operational, policy and research areas.
The draft NFFS was released by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry in November 2008. An Implementation Committee was then formed under the Chair of Mr. Paul Hickey to develop an Action Plan to guide implementation of the NFFS. This Action Plan, which was released in April 2010, is designed to implement critical recommendations and strategies contained in the draft NFFS.

In 2009, a new expert based NFFS Implementation Committee independently chaired by Paul Hickey developed the NFFS Action Plan (AP). Industry and government experts collated the plan and following broad public consultation, released the final NFFS AP in April 2010.
The NFFS AP is designed to bring about enhanced market access through the provision of a new and improved, resource efficient, nationally integrated approach to fruit fly management in Australia.
The NFFS AP sets out 15 broad project initiatives across the commodity supply chain and proposes a national governance structure.
